 Its indigenous inhabitants once called Jamaica Xaymaca, which translates to land of springs, or the land of wood and water. Later, when the Spanish acquired the island, they named it Santiago. As a part of the British Empire, it became the British West Indies Crown colony of Jamaica.
Jamaica, as it is called today, is the third largest island in the Caribbean, as well as the most populous English-speaking island in the Caribbean. It is located 90 miles south of Cuba, and 120 miles west of Hispaniola. It has a tropical climate, although higher inland regions have a milder climate.
Montego Bay (MoBay for short) is an especially popular American destination, as there are many direct flights from the U.S. to MoBay’s airport. Two hours east of the airport is Ocho Rios, a verdant, tropical island spot that is also a frequent cruise crowd draw.
Port Antonio sits to the east of Ocho Rios, and is one of the most pristine parts of the island. You’ll find Negril two hours west of Montego Bay. Negril hangs on to its laid-back, hippie roots, although it has seen major resort development and tourism growth over the last few years.
High season in Jamaica runs from mid-December through April. Vacationers flock to Jamaica during this time to enjoy the island’s natural beauty - its white-sand beaches, lush foliage, rivers, mountains, and clear waterfalls. Jamaica also boasts some of the best golf courses in the West Indies, excellent diving waters, and exciting river rafting.
If you like parties and live music, don’t miss Carnival, the largest island-wide festival held in Kingston (Jamaica’s capital), Ocho Rios, and MoBay every March and April (and in Negril in May). And for fans of reggae, be sure to check out Reggae Sumfest, generally held in late July or early August.

- Staying at Bromley is to experience a Jamaica with a rare authenticity. The house, perched in the hills of the beautiful parish of St. Ann on the north coast of the island, has been in the one family for six generations.
- Its generous verandahs offer sweeping views into the interior of the island. Its grounds, filled with mature trees and tropical plants, are home to hundreds of birds including the Jamaican “Doctor Bird."
- The foundation of the house is a 16th century Spanish Fort and this level of the house with its thick stone walls remains cool whatever the temperature outside and features two double en suite rooms and a communal sleeping area.
- The main floor of the house has a double guest room with bath and two large master suites, each with dressing rooms, large bathrooms, and private balconies.
- Each master suite features Jamaican made mahogany four poster beds, one of which is larger than king, was custom made for Sir John Pringle, the family patriarch. The serene dining room at the heart of the house can seat sixteen at its long table.
- Bromley can accommodate up to ten people (we can squeeze in more) but also offers single suites or use of “The Schoolroom,” a charming self-contained cottage adjacent to the house, which can sleep up to four.
- The house is also used as an artist retreat and has a large outdoor yoga studio.
- There is also a small but deeply refreshing pool.
- Painters, writers or poets, who wish to take some time out to create, can take advantage of longer stays in one of the suites or in the Schoolroom cottage.
