Known as the “Playground of the Stars,” Palm Springs is a celebrated California desert resort city, 110 miles east of Los Angeles and 140 miles northeast of San Diego.
Protected by the Little San Bernardino Mountains to the north, the Santa Rosa Mountains to the south, and the San Jacinto Mountains to the west, Palm Springs is renowned for its warm, dry climate.
With 354 days of sunshine, less than 6 inches of rain annually, and winter temperatures that average in the 70s (with nights in the low-to-mid 40s), is it any wonder that Palm Springs is an outdoor lover’s paradise?
Over the last decade, many new residents of the resort city have acquired an appreciation for mid-century modern architecture – part of the worldliness and historic fabric of Palm Springs.
Born out of the aesthetics of the acclaimed German Bauhaus, this tradition of architecture is reflected in the work of Albert Frey (who designed the Palm Springs city hall, tram station, Movie Colony Hotel and airport), Donald Wexler, and other illustrious architects.
In the 1950’s, Alexander Homes – a home developer – popularized this post-and-beam architectural style in the resort city. Distinguishing features of an Alexander home included low-pitched roofs, wide eaves, open-beamed ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows.
Today, “Alexander homes” are much sought after for their indoor/outdoor ambiance, which thoroughly lends itself to discreet, poolside living in the desert.
Thus baby boomers and yuppies, nostalgic for the kidney-shaped swimming pools and the ranch-style vacation homes, are restoring many of the original buildings to their 1950s splendor.
And yes, swimming, sunbathing, golfing, and playing tennis are still the primary pastimes in Palm Springs. It is not unusual to do any of the above outdoor activities in 80-degree weather mid-winter, all while gazing at the snow-covered peaks of the San Jacintos.
