Relax on Florida's Lower Keys

The Florida Keys – approximately 1700 islands – lie along the Florida Straits, dividing the Atlantic Ocean from the Gulf of Mexico. They begin at the southeastern tip of the Florida peninsula, and extend southwest to Key West, the last habitable island of the chain. Of the 45 inhabited islands, 43 link to the mainland by bridges.

The Keys are the only frost-free spots in Florida. The climate is tropical wet-and-dry. There are two main seasons on the Keys: hot, wet, and humid from June through October, and slightly drier and cooler from November through May.

Life on the Keys, often referred to as the “Conch Republic” (reflecting the population’s somewhat separatist attitude towards the rest of the country), is easygoing. Major industries include fishing and tourism.

In contrast to their neighbors to the north and south, the Lower Keys (including Big Pine, Sugarloaf, and Summerland) are largely free of rowdy late-night crowds and boisterous spring breakers. In this regard, they make an ideal place to enjoy the great outdoors and the region’s rich wildlife.

The Keys are home to unique animal species, including the Key deer (protected by the National Key Deer Refuge), and the American crocodile. About 70 miles west of Key West is Dry Tortugas National Park, one of the smallest and most remote national parks in the U.S. It is comprised of seven small islands, coral reefs, and nesting areas for a variety of wild birds, and is well worth a visit.

If you enjoy the outdoors, don’t miss the 524-acre Bahia State Park on Big Pine Key. Widely believed to have the most stunning coastline in South Florida, Bahia Honda is an ideal place for hiking, bird watching, swimming, fishing, and snorkeling (the park has relatively deep waters close to shore).

Also, be sure to check out the beautiful reefs at Looe Key, where the coral and fish are considered to be the most vibrant in the U.S. Snorkeling trips leave from Biahia Honda to Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary twice daily from March through September.

Finally, don’t travel to the Lower Keys without a visit to Key West, only 90 miles from Havana. With an average temperature of 79 degrees, storied 19th century architecture, funky galleries, shops and museums, and a large number of festivals and artistic events, few islands offer the array of culture and diversity that defines Key West.

Beautiful Bay View Florida Keys Home – Property 107389

  • This house is an ideal property for fishermen and divers, as they can moor their own boat in front of the house and have excellent access to both the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean.

  • The house is conveniently located 5 miles from Bahia Honda State Park,15 miles from Marathon, and 32 miles from Key West.

From the perspective of a person who has spent the last thirty years vacationing in the Lower Keys over the holidays, I think that the ideal ways to celebrate include:

  • Spend the day at Bahia Honda State Park, which has one of the most beautiful beaches in the lower keys. Other great beaches are Anne's beach in Marathon and Smathers beach in Key West.

  • Take a historic tour of Key West on the Conch Tour train.

  • Take a day trip to the Dry Tortugas by boat or plane. This is the site of Fort Jefferson where John Wilkes Booth was imprisoned, and it is surrounded by waters that are excellent for snorkeling.

  • Go scuba diving or snorkeling at Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary.

  • Charter a deep sea fishing trip.

  • Swim with the dolphins at the Dolphin Research Center in Marathon.

  • Blue Heaven & Pepe's which are great for breakfast/brunch.

  • As far as lunch, we love to spend an afternoon at Schooner Wharf enjoying their Buffalo Shrimp and the acoustic entertainment.

  • If martinis are your choice of drink, the cosmos and espresso martinis are great at Lateda. One of my favorite bartenders – “Sassy” works Wednesday to Saturday nights there. Stop in and say "Hi." Tell him Big Daddy & Danette sent you.
