I had the pleasure of staying at Italy’s “Vista Lago,” a delightful lakefront villa located in Carate Urio, Lake Como. The beautiful accommodations and surrounding area made such a lasting impression that I can hardly wait to return.

Lake Como is known for its quaint romantic towns and charming villas. “Vista Lago,” formerly Hotel Larius is fit for royalty with its cheerful modern décor and breathtaking views. The fusion of luxury and nature gives you no choice but to feel relaxed in such a tranquil setting. Each of its rooms is spacious and light-filled, which adds to the welcoming ambiance of this apartment.

My host, Barbara, was extremely accommodating in helping us navigate the area. There are many sightseeing options as well as numerous cafes, all worth taking the time to visit. One thing you won’t want to miss is touring the grounds of Villa Baglianello, the site of a private family estate and featured in the film “A Month by the Lake.” The villa is accessible only by boat, situated on its own island. Be sure to ask Barbara if you can arrange for a private tour.

Lake Como is not far from the city of Milan, one of the renowned fashion capitals of the world. From the posh fashion district to the local markets, you’ll find shopping for everyone. If visiting the city is not your idea of a getaway, you may prefer the picturesque towns surrounding the lake.

You can take the ferry to navigate your way around; however, if you prefer to travel by car or bus, you will not be disappointed with the beautiful, flower-lined cobblestone streets, quaint outdoor cafés that serve cappuccinos and gelato, and elegant restaurants that hug the shoreline. On the southern shore is Bellagio, “the pearl of the lake,” considered by many to be the most beautiful town in all of Europe. Here you can visit Villa Serbelloni, the villa that the famous Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, is modeled after.

Menaggio is located on the western shore. This is a great town to visit if you enjoy hiking or mountain biking. Visit nearby Switzerland and seize the opportunity to hike and mountain bike in the Swiss Alps. Cable railways can take you to the top of the peaks for breathtaking views.

Vista Lago is an ideal place to stay for a honeymoon, anniversary or any romantic getaway.
